Most of us would be lying if we said that we did not enjoy our childhood. That is one of the best periods in one’s life. The minimun responsibilities and abundant love makes it all interesting and remembering worthy. Our African parents especially the mothers, made it all better with the boundless love shown through different ways, obviously serious caning included😅.
Growing up,everything seemed easy. The routine was very easy to remember and required no timetable or reminders. You would wake up,eat and go out to play without even washing your face. The program was to play till lunch, then come back home and then go back out again till evening.Back then we had no google accounts, facebook accounts nor whatsapp.Things were just so simple until adulthood came in.

As we were growing up,we played different kind of games and they were all really fun.The boys would go for swimming in the local ponds or dam, play circle games, hide and seek and play football too.We never seemed to get tired back then. The girls would play hide and seek, jump rope and some went swimming. At the end of the day,we all knew we were gonna face the rod when we went home.

So there is this story of a friend of mine who almost left us while we were still young. On that almost fateful day,my friend(Oboste) went swimming with a couple of non-professionals and almost lost his life for that. The guy drowned and none of his colleagues could save him.Luckily,a bystander jumped in,swam like Aqua man and saved his life. That incident still did not deter us from going back there to swim.We would still go there day in day out.

The greatest amount of fun came when we went back home in the evening. Our parents were firm believers of the saying,’spare the rod, spoil the child’.Our dear mothers would stretch our skin to see whether we spent the day swimming and they always knew unless you had applied vaseline to conceal it.The punishment that would follow if you were found guilty was just so ‘sweet’😅.The caning is just so nostalgic.
I think that the best thing we can do for our children is to allow them to do things for themselves, allow them to be strong, allow them to experience life on their own terms, allow them to take the subway… let them be better people, let them believe more in themselves.

Childhood was one of the best times, you need to enjoy it to the fullest, would be proud if I get a replica of the same in my adulthood.
